Abuja — Federal Government has condemned human rights violations unleashed on workers of Western Sahara, stating that it would co-opt the Nigerian Labour Congress leadership to tackle some of the problems in the region.
In a statement by Minister of Labour and Productivity, Adetokunbo Kayode, government said it would also mobilise other international human rights organisations against those who try to violate and frustrate the peace plan agreement by the United Nations to ensure that peace reigns in the Western Sahara.
Kayode said this at the weekend in Abuja when he received President of the Saharawi Collective of Human Rights Defenders, Aminatou Haidar, who paid him a courtesy visit.
"While I commend you (Haidar) for your courage and concern for the freedom of the entire people of the Western Sahara, let me assure you that Nigeria will do everything possible to ensure that the rights to self determination in Western Sahara is respected.
"We shall likewise mobilise other international human rights organisations against those wishing to violate and frustrate the peace plan agreement by the United Nations to ensure that peace reigns in the Western Sahara ," he said.
He called on the NLC to accelerate awareness campaign about the rights of the people of Western Sahara in Africa, adding that such steps would hasten the settlement of the conflict in Western Sahara.
In a remark by the Saharawi leader, she noted that Nigeria commands great respect in Africa and that such strength should be used for the liberation of others in the region.
