Liberia: Postal Affairs Dedicates Postal Office in Nimba

Postmaster General of the Republic of Liberia, Minister Jeremiah C. Sulunteh, at the head of a delegation comprised of key stakeholders officially dedicated a newly rehabilitated post office in Sanniquellie City, Nimba County, which also coincided with celebration of the 135th anniversary of World Post Day and held outside of Monrovia for the first time.

During the program several employees of the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications were honored for their dedicated services following by a launching of writing competition and the introduction of new postal stamps.

In his speech marking the celebration of World Post Day Nimba County Minister Jeremiah Sulunteh averred that the Liberia postal service is alone in the quest to provide basic services, rather, is a unit of 191 member's countries that constitute Universal Postal Union (UPU) which is the governing body of all member states.

As admonished in this year proclamation signed by the President Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Liberia has been a signatory to this treaty 1879. Underscoring the privilege to host another world post day celebration in historic city of Sanniquella, he urged residents and possible customers to make maximum used of the postal facilitates in getting their mail and parcels to and from them.

Launching the writing competition, Minister Sulunteh emphasized that participating schools will submit 800-word or less essay entitled "Write a letter to someone to explain why it is important to talk about HIV/AIDS and to protect you against it"; and that to help meet this challenge five counties have been targeted with 2,000 youths and students within these counties to participate in this competition as UPU will award winner by august 2010 and that individual will feature in the 2010 union postal magazine.

First three international prize winners will receive a gold, silver or bronze metal as well as certificates and other prizes while local prizes scholarships, school materials. For her part, Nimba County Superintendent Edith Gongloe Weh thanked the national government through Ministry for inaugurating postal facilitates in the country, which she believes will help take Liberia out of Monrovia.

The program which was marked with pomp and pageantry was climaxed with a football match between Sanniquellia Central High and St. Mary Catholic High School at the County's sports stadium with St. Mary defeating her challenger two goals to one in what sport analysts described as retaliation, when Central High defeated St. Mary one goal to nil.
