Harare — High-riding sungura musician Josphat Somanje's much-awaited DVD album is out!
The DVD album titled "This Time" could act as an early Christmas present for any serious music collector as Zimbabwe Music Corporation, to which he is signed, have put all his classic hits on the compilation.
Indeed, This Time DVD needs no introduction as it has endeared well with music lovers particularly sungura aficionados.
There was a deliberate attempt to go down memory lane to fish out some of Josphat's yesteryear hits from his three albums Hope Dzeumambo, Takarasa Nguva and the latest This Time.
From the album Hope Dzeumambo there is a classic video of the song of the same name. If it isn't the lovely beats and rhythms then it must be the eye-catching shots of the video that would move you.
For those not in the know Hope Dzeumambo was one of his first solo projects since he broke away from the group Pengaudzoke to form his own Somanje Stars.
And on Takarasa Nguva the plug track Sochisi Yemombe was perfectly done with diverse backgrounds and backdrops.
I like it when sungura musicians try to portray real life drama in their videos. You talk of the leading role by male or female as well as the story itself is typical of Zimbabwean music.
The cameo roles by some of the popular actors and actresses capture the attention of music lovers.
Of course, I appreciate the fact that we have not yet reached that stage when video directors have to come up with concepts before shooting.
In fact, I don't remember any of the musicians who seriously engage video directors, half the time it would be the artistes themselves doubling as directors.
Maybe our music industry should work closely with those in the film industry to shoot music videos the way it is done at international level.
There is nothing wrong in trying it out.
The way we do it is quite different in that we are only concerned about identifying scenes and not the concept just like the newly weds who worry more about the costumes than the photographer or the setting.
Another video that will have fans glued to their screens is the one titled Mukaranga.
Definitely when we reviewed the album This Time there was a lot of debate as to which track was hottest.
Some people argued Handibvume (Haulume) was a stroke of a genius while others opted for Mukaranga and even up to now some people have said Jorijo was the best track on the album.
Nevertheless, we are basically confirming Josphat's great artistry as his presence is felt throughout the album.
Handibvume's video has been causing quite a stir on ZBC-TV music programmes and it still continues to make heat waves but now that there are other videos including Jorijo and Mukaranga perceptions are bound to change.
It would be a tall order for Josphat to come with a sure fire hit like This Time but given the amount of talent he exhibited, he could repeat it.
The other video that music lovers cannot afford to skip is Kwete Kuvatenderera.
To add value to the package ZMC have also included behind-the-scenes clips of how the DVD album was made.
Of course, this should bring laughter to his fans as they get to see some of the beeps and blunders that go on during shooting.
There is no doubt this is a total package!
Another new release from ZMC is the comedy DVD starring the "Notorious Kapfupi in what goes around comes around". This time Kapfupi features alongside his sidekick Charles Marisi. Others in the comedy are Blessing Vingirai, Rumbidzai Navaya, Luke Ephraim and Precious Navaya.
Kapfupi is probably at his best when he is on stage. Although he has developed a liking for music he is well-known for his razor sharp humour than music.
The comedy is set to bring laughter to his fans.
