Madagascar/Rwanda: Road to Madagascar

Yesterday

14 October 2009

Kigali — AFTER yesterday's inexcusable performance against Tunisia, I realised that we had raised our bar so high when we time and again talked of a quarter-final slot being the least we expected from the national women basketball team, who are only making their debut at this year's Fiba-Africa Championship for Women in Madagascar.

After losing their first three games, Rwanda's quarter-final chances rested on victories from their final games against Tunisia and Ivory Coast and until the third quarter yesterday, Rwanda looked on course of landing their first win of the tourney only to squander a nine-point lead in the final quarter.

Rwanda entered the final quarter on top 49-40 but managed only four points in the final quarter while the North Africans ran amok with 19 points to eventual secure their first win 59-53.

It was certainly Rwanda's best chance of snatching a win in the group and they blew it.

The defeat means that even if the first timers win their final group fixture against Ivory Coast, they are destined to contend for the last four slots (9th to 12th).

Group B

Tunisia 59-53 Rwanda

(20-9, 13-23, 7-17, 19-4)
