Lagos — Primate of the African Church of Nigeria, Most Revd Emmanuel Udofia has commended the Federal Government for reaching a compromise with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend its four months old industrial action for two weeks.
Last Friday, ASUU suspended the strike action it embarked since June 22, for two weeks to enable a cordial atmosphere for a peaceful conclusion of negotiation between it and the federal government.
Udofia who spoke with newsmen on the state of nation during an official visit to Saviour's African Church Cathedral, Awori Diocese, Lagos , at the weekend, said suspending the strike would give the government another opportunity to go into proper negotiation with the union and expressed hope that it would yield a good result.
"It is my prayer that God will touch the hearts of our leaders in this country, as soon as ASUU commences another round of negotiation, I pray they come out with something positive so that our education sector can meet up with international standard."
According to him, if there was a mutual agreement and understanding between ASUU and federal government, there would have been no strike in the first instance, "I want to appeal to our leaders to have the fear of God by ensuring that whatever promises they made to the electorates during the election campaign should be met and our leaders should exhibit the servant leadership role."
He also commended the amnesty that was granted to repentant militants in the Niger Delta region and prayed that God should give members of the president's cabinet more wisdom in achieving the great success recorded in resolving the Niger Delta crisis.
"I urge the president to ensure that he meet up with what he promised the region so that the repented militants by the grace of God will not go back to the creek to perpetuate evil acts."
