Nigeria: Abuja Central Garden For N12 Billion Upgrade

Abuja — The FCT Administration has said it will develop and upgrade the Abuja Central Park and Botanical Garden situated at the foot of the Aso Rock.

Isa Shuaibu, FCT Director, Parks and Recreation, who disclosed this to newsmen in Abuja yesterday, said the project is going to be developed through the Public Private Partnership PPP concept.

"We have just started the process of identifying and selecting competent hands that will partner with the FCT in implementing our vision. Of course this will mark the dawn of a new beginning in tourism and it will also mark a new beginning of the development of our local and national economies."

The Director said the project is estimated close to 12billion but that government is not going to bear the cost as two private companies have expressed interest after its advertisement.

He said the emphasis in this project is going to be on the conservation and optimum advantage taken in involving the tourist resort in the central parks Abuja garden.

The press has a duty to investigate such excellent sounding phrases of huge sums of money being menthioned by some government officials like Isa M. Shuaibu. Some of the questions could be: Has the department really carried out the planning process of such projects? What happened to the desigh churned out by Jardinduring the Modibbo era? Have conducted the Environmental and social impact assessment? Do you have the budget to initiate such projects? Who are the promoters of this company that intend to develop a hotel (merriots and real estate) in an area that is an organised open space in the master plan? Who are the promoters of the company (Aventine) that got the Minister's directive to be allocated the land within two weeks that almost breached due process except for the intervention of AIIC - Abuja infrastructure and investment company? Why are there only two companies bidding for a twelve billion naira project in Nigeria? Abuja for sale to the highest bidder.Sky gel and Aventine real estate development and not Abuja central park development.
