The recent rampant accidents that have claimed innocent lives and seriously injured many people, have generated a great deal of concern among the general public; thus prompting stakeholders, including individuals, to devise ways and means of averting future road accidents.
The latest individual to take up the challenge in complementing the efforts of the government, the police force in particuly, is Dawda Sarr, a Gambian based in Germany. Sarr, who is well known for his complementary efforts in the area of road safety, arrived in the country a week ago, and has since been busy on a voluntary road safety initiative within the Greater Banjul Area.
Touched by the recent fatal road accidents in the country which he learned of through media reports while in Germany, this concerned Gambian brought home about a thousand traffic reflectors. He is currently on a campaign to have them attached to the poles of most of the major junctions on key highways within the Greater Banjul Area.
The idea behind this vital initiative, according to him, is meant to curb accidents on the roads."These reflectors save lives. When I came to know the recent accidents in the country through media reports while in Germany, I was very touched," he said. "I said to myself," he went on "that I have to help my people as I used to do because accidents are happening all the time." Anything I have that can contribute to the development of my country, I will bring it," he asserted, while advising his colleagues not to hesitate to contribute to national development when they have the chance.
Sarr joined other concerned citizens in appealing to drivers to drive carefully given the fact that most of the past accidents occurred as a result of over speeding. It can be recalled that Dawda Sarr first started complementing the efforts of The Gambia Police Force towards road safety as far back as 1993, when he donated traffic equipment to them. This was followed by another donation to the same security outfit in 2007 when he donated two digital alcohol testers.
That donation was meant to help in curbing drink-driving, which also accounts for many road accidents the world over. Sarr continued his donations in 2008 and 2009. He also donated 882 tins of multivitamins to the Presidential Treatment Programme this year.
