Nigeria: FG, ASUU Face-Off to Be Resolved Soon

Benin — Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state yesterday assured that efforts were being made to prevent the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) from continuing its strike action as all outstanding issues in the industrial dispute between it and the Federal Government would be resolved in the next two weeks.

His assurance came on a day the University of Calabar branch of ASUU advised students not to hurry back to school following the two-week suspension of the union's nationwide strike.

Oshiomhole, who had mediated the two weeks suspension of ASUU strike, however, remarked that "everyday lost in academic calendar is a day lost forever" and expressed confidence that the nation's educational system would soon be strengthened.

Oshiomhole spoke when the new executive and members of the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo state council paid him a courtesy visit, stressing that the future of Nigeria depended on credible elections and urged journalists to reportfactually during elections.

He, however expressed concerns with some media reportage of Akoko-Edo Constituency 1 re - run election in August, pointing out that contrary to such reports; the election was hitch-free compared to what happened in re - run elections elsewhere in the country.

The governor expressed gratitude for the tremendous support he had enjoyed from the media, especially from members of the Correspondents Chapel since he assumed office, regretting that journalists fight for society but no one fights for their welfare.

He congratulated members of the Correspondents Chapel for organising afree and fair election and promised that his administration would co -operate and collaborate with the leadership and members of the Chapel to ease their movement.

UNICAL ASUU advised students to remain at home and monitor developments on the suspension of the strike, to ensure that "they do not rush to school only to move out again if the strike has to resume".UNICAL branch Chairman, Dr Chike Ekeopara, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Calabar that the advice became necessary, because the on going negotiations were not conclusive yet.

"It is true we are back at work, but I won't advise the students to come back now, because government may disappoint and we will resume the strike.

The wise thing for them to do now is to remain at home and monitor what happens during and after the two weeks," he said.

Ekeopara said government actually asked for one week to enable it to address the issues raised by ASUU, "but we decided to give two weeks to enable the officials to have enough time to address the matter".

We appreciate what the comrade govt is doing, but we want the FG and Asuu officials to come together and neggociate & sign this thing once and forever, bcos it has now been 8 days now since the suspension of the strike and there is no input yet. Plz i want the FG to seat to this, so that students may go back to their various schools back.
