Nairobi — The Malindi Constituency Development Fund will spend over Sh100 million on rural electrification.
Malindi MP Gideon Mung'aro said 20 villages, about 80 per cent of the district, had been targeted for electrification by 2012.
"Our ambition is that electricity covers as many parts of the district as possible. This will enable the youth to start workshops and small businesses to help them economically," said Mr Mung'aro.
Electricity will also be extended to schools, the MP said, to improve standards.
Among the areas to benefit are Mijomboni (Sh9.4 million), Chakama (Sh25.3 million), Shakahola (Sh35.3 million), Jimba-Gede (Sh4.1 million) and Kibokoni (Sh3.7 million).
The MP made the remarks at Mkengeni Village when he presented a Sh650,000 cheque from the CDF to Malindi Water and Sewerage Company for water projects in the village.
He said education, health, water and other projects would be funded from the CDF kitty and hailed the government for approving a bigger CDF budget.
However, Mr Mung'aro accused the local council of giving residents poor services.
"Despite receiving Sh53 million from the Local Authority Trust Fund, there is nothing to show on the ground," he said.
The cash was allegedly used to pay workers' salary arrears instead of funding development projects.
