Uganda: Farmers On Wetlands Warned

Pallisa — Farmers who will be found cultivating in a wetland will be punished, Pallisa deputy Resident District Commissioner has warned.

Mr Mande Kintu said the high level of wetland destruction will cause more environmental dangers in the district.

"Destruction of these wetlands has negatively affected the climate resulting into severe drought currently being experienced now," he said.

The RDC's warning comes at a time when the district leaders are under attack by a section of politicians for trying to send farmers out of the wetlands.

The most affected wetlands are Panian, Apapa, Limoto and Gogonyo.

Mr Kintu told Daily Monitor on Tuesday that the wetlands have been massively destroyed for the purpose of growing rice, which is now the main source of income for the area residents but added that should not be an excuse .
