Kampala — International charity ActionAid has asked the Government to increase funding to the agriculture sector to boost food security.

The group has called for a 10% increase in the budgetary allocation to the sector from the current 4%.

In a report on hunger and food crisis that has been released ahead of the World Food Day, Actionaid also called for effective resource utilisation.

Quoting a report from the Prime minister's office, the group said 55 districts in the country were grappling with hunger, while 17 were experiencing famine and 31, acute food shortage.

The hardest-hit districts, according to ActionAid are in Karamoja, Budaka and Busoga. It said in north-eastern Uganda, 83% of the population has one meal or none a day.

The organisation also called for the implementation of the food and nutrition Bill.

"The Bill is stuck in Parliament even though it is an exemplary policy which could avert food crises," the group said.
