Maputo — The Mozambican police in Mutarara district, in the western province of Tete, have recovered a safe belonging to the District Health Directorate, which was stolen on the night of 25 September, reports Friday's issue of the Maputo daily "Noticias".
Two people were arrested in connection with the theft of the safe, which contained 405,692 meticais (about 14,750 US dollars) for the payment of four months wage arrears to some Mutarara health workers.
Joao Gimo Sozinho, of the public relations department at the Tete provincial police command, told reporters that the thieves were denounced by local residents, who said that there are another two in the gang, who are still at large, with part of the money.
He said the police investigations had so far managed to recover only 122,810 meticais of the stolen money.
The Mutarara district health director, Albertina Massinga, denied that the thieves could have been health workers. "They got in by breaking down the main doors to the Administration and Finance Office", she said. "Besides taking the safe, they damaged lockers, and destroyed some documents".
Massinga added that with the money so far recovered, her directorate has been able to pat part of the wage arrears.
