Maputo — Sussundenga (Mozambique), 16 Oct (AIM) - Five members of the opposition Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) publicly defected to the ruling Frelimo Party on Wednesday in Sussundenga district, in the central province of Manica.
The five were presented at an election rally addressed by the head of the Frelimo brigade in Manica, Interior Minister Jose Pacheco. He said they were welcome inside Frelimo, and hoped they would persuade other people who had been "deceived" by opposition parties to join them.
This follows the defection to Frelimo a few days earlier of ten members of the main opposition force, the former rebel movement Renamo.
Pacheco declared that these defections show that Frelimo's message is being well received and understood among the electorate. He urged the party's new members to play a full role in the struggle against poverty, which remains Frelimo's top priority.
Only Frelimo was capable of leading that struggle, he said, for Frelimo was the party that "when it makes a promise, carries it out".
The Frelimo first secretary in Sussundenga, Venancio Veremo, claimed to reporters that Frelimo has carried its message to all 61,440 registered voters in the district. He said it had penetrated areas of difficult access, such as Dombe, once regarded as a Renamo stronghold. In such areas, where access roads barely exist, the Frelimo brigades had done their campaigning on foot.
"What remains for us is to continue working at the same pace until the end of the campaign at all levels, in the belief that victory for Frelimo and for Armando Guebuza is certain in this district", declared Veremo.
