Ghana: Navy Personnel Embark On Route March

17 October 2009

Personnel of the Eastern Naval Command in Tema and the Western Naval Command in Sekondi-Takoradi, on Friday embarked on a 16-kilometre route march in commemoration of the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Ghana Navy.

A total of 600 personnel comprising serving and retired military personnel, including their civilian counterparts took part in the march.

The march was led by Commodore Albert Addison, Flag Officer Commanding the Eastern Naval Command.

Participants started the four-hour march at 0730 hours from the naval base in Tema Manhean through Tema communities one and four.

Lieutenant Ben Abdul, Commanding Officer of the Tema Naval Base, said the march offered the participants the opportunity to educate the public on the functions of the navy, which include protection of the country's territorial waters and enforcement of maritime laws.

He said the march was aimed at fostering a cordial civil-military relationship.

Lt Abdul said the activity was also used to solicit support from the public to understand the need for government to properly equip the military.

The Commanding Officer indicated that as part of the programme lined up for the celebration, the naval base would organise an open day for the general public on October 24.

Lt Abdul said, during the day, there would be an exhibition, demonstration of amusement firing and sea trips.
