Abeokuta — Three persons were killed early yesterday morning in Abeokuta when a building collapsed, with nine other residents sustaining serious injuries.
The injured were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre where fears are also growing that they may be on the danger list.
Meanwhile LEADERSHIP learnt that the building is sai d to be 30 years old. The house, which is situated at Oke-Padre, Ijemo area of the town, was said to have collapsed at about 12.00am when the occupants were fast asleep.
The state Fire Service, according to eye-witness account, raced to the scene of the incident.
They succeeded in rescuing nine persons who were trapped in the debris, while three were confirmed dead on the spot. Scores of sympathisers were seen crying profusely over the calamity.
According to sources, the dead persons names are: Kehinde Soremekun, Iyabo Soremekun and Saheed, a young boy said to be a cobbler
However, Mr Tunde Odusote, Director of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) led a team of his personnel to the scene and were seen complementing the efforts of the Fire Service.
He said the remains of the building would be pulled down, while efforts would equally be made to retrieve the properties inside.
Speaking to newsmen, Prince Adeleke Adedoyin, Commissioner for Environment in the state, noted that the topography of the building was the major factor for the collapse, adding that the building was constructed in a run-off side.
