Zimbabwe: Residents Face Eviction

20 October 2009

Harare — Forty-two Chitungwiza residents in Unit B face eviction from their stands after Government condemned them, arguing that the town council had unprocedurally allocated the stands to the beneficiaries.

The Ministry of Transport, Communication and Infrastructure Development stopped the construction of the houses, saying Chitungwiza Town Council erred in allocating the stands as they are likely to interfere with future roadworks. Most of the stands affected are along the Wedza Road near Makoni Shopping Centre and some of them are barely five metres from the main road.

Chitungwiza Town Council public relations manager Mr Zephania Mandirahwe yesterday said the town council allocated the stands last year and some residents were in the process of building houses. However, they were told to stop, as the stands were too close to a major road.

"The Ministry (of Transport, Communication and Infrastructure Development) objected the construction of the houses, citing future prospects of widening the road.

"Those who have been affected have been allocated stands in other parts of Chitungwiza and this is the only compensation, which we can offer," he said.

However, some residents complained that the town council was failing allocating stands willy-nilly.

"How can the council allocate a stand just five metres away from a busy main road?

"They are exposing people to danger as they can be easily hit by moving vehicles," said one resident who declined to be named.
