Kampala — East Africa is on the edge of a changing internet environment, the information and communications technology minister, has said. "The region is on the brink of a changed broadband and information, communications and technology environment, with the landing of the submarine cables in Mombasa and Dar-es-Salaam," Aggrey Awori said.
The minister was launching the E-Readness Survey report for 50 East African universities at Kampala Serena Hotel recently. Awori said as part of ensuring a national readiness to take advantage of the new technical developments, his ministry has established a Uganda Broadband Infrastructure Strategy Team.
The strategy team, he said, comprises of representatives from the Government, regulators, operators, internet service providers, investors and the academia.
"The infrastructure team was put in place with the objective of providing the Government with a well informed position for enabling it to access international broadband infrastructure," Awori added.
The minister explained that his ministry is studying a number of policy options for the effective implementation of the National Broadband Strategy.
