Kigali — The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees chief, Antonio Gutteres, has pledged his support in ensuring that Congolese refugees get immediate repatriation back to their country.
Gutteres made the remarks on Tuesday during his visit to Nyabiheke refugee camp in Gatsibo District.
He told the displaced persons, that he has so far held discussions with the Congolese government on how they can be repatriated soon.
"I never experienced a refugee life since I was born, but I know how it pains being a refugee. I know you lost your dignity as citizens and many of your properties were destroyed, but I have talked to President Joseph Kabila and he assured me that your repatriation will soon be successful," he assured the refugees.
"The [Congolese] government will first have to solve pressing issues like security and restoring harmony among citizens. But I am optimistic that this will be reached soon," he said.
The refugees cited poor hygiene, poor education and inadequate food provided in the camp, among their challenges.
In response, Gutteres said that through UNHCR Rwanda, available resources will be used to solve the problems.
The Minister of Local Government, Christophe Bazivamo who accompanied Gutteres told refugees to be patient while waiting for their repatriation.
He added that bilateral ties between the two governments have been restored; citing the reopening of embassies in both countries as a big sign that their repatriation is near.
