Uganda:Uniform Phone Charges Due

21 October 2009

Kampala — THE Government is to introduce a uniform interconnection tariff for telecommunication operators in the country, Augustus Mulenga, the I-Telecom managing director, has said.

He said there were high charges across networks because individual telecoms were at liberty to determine their own interconnection fees.

He was speaking during the first family business conference in Kampala last week.

In telecommunications, interconnection means the physical linking of a carrier's network with equipment or facilities not belonging to that network.

The term may also refer to a connection between a carrier's facilities and the equipment belonging to its customer, or to a connection between two or more carriers.

"When the uniform tariff is implemented in November, customers will be able to make calls across networks at reduced rates."

Mulenga added that the coming of the Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System, an initiative to connect countries of eastern Africa via a high bandwidth fibre optic cable system to the rest of the world, and The East Africa Marine System cable in June next year will bring down Internet costs. It will also enable people to download heavy documents cheaply.

The SEACOM fibre optic cable was launched in the country recently.

Uganda has six telecom operators; MTN, utl, WARID, Zain, Orange and I-Telecom.

Meanwhile, James Mulwana, a founder and proprietor of many family businesses, encouraged people to believe in themselves if they are to prosper in any business.

Speaking at the same function, he said most businesses world over begin at a family level.
