South Africa: Skwatsha, Ozinsky Betrayed Rasool?

Western Cape Premier Helen Zille has accused two senior provincial ANC members - Mcebisi Skwatsha and Max Ozinsky - of leaking information to the DA as part of their party's internal war that has raged for years and led to its downfall in the April elections.

Zille told the provincial legislature yesterday that members of her party were opposed to a social upliftment programme initiated by former ANC premier Ebrahim Rasool, based on the information given to them by Skwatsha, the party's former provincial head, and Ozinsky, its chief whip.

Zille revealed this while responding to a question on her administration's plan regarding the Social Transformation Project, established to uplift the 27 vulnerable communities identified by the previous administration. The project was meant to tackle poverty, crime, unemployment and drugs.

Zille said the project was part of the modernisation programme her administration had embarked upon and would be reviewed in the context of the provincial process of modernising the provincial public service.

"The extension or not of the programme is subject to the finalisation of the modernisation process. The modernisation steering committee will consider proposals on a variety of initiatives to modernise the provincial government and the outcomes of the process will be consulted on an administrative level before final submissions are made to the provincial cabinet," she said.

Ozinsky wanted to know whether the attacks on the programme by the DA in the past were just politicking at the time.

"Given that a number of members in the House including (Transport and Public Works MEC Robin) Carlisle, (Finance and Tourism MEC Alan) Winde and (Health MEC Theuns) Botha have attacked this programme, what has changed now that the DA might support the programme?" Ozinsky asked.

Zille responded: "I don't recall attacking any particular programme. What I do recall is Ozinsky and Skwatsha accusing Rasool of using the programme to build a base for the Rasool faction of the ANC using taxpayers' money.

"You can be sure that the analysis on which Carlisle or any member of the DA attacked the programme was based on information given to them by Ozinsky and Skwatsha."

When Ozinsky denied giving DA members information, Zille said: "The fact of the matter is, what we got and the questions we got to ask, we had very reliable sources on them."

Ozinsky demanded that Zille supply evidence to back up her claim while Skwatsha said: "What the premier is saying is untrue."
