Tunis — Mohamed Zran (born 1959) is a Tunisian film director and screenwriter. His film Le Casseur des Pierres was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival. A native of Zarzis, Mohamed Zran studied Film Studies in Paris and directed several short films, fiction and documentaries, including: "Saida" 1996 and "Le Prince" in 2004.
"Zarzis", a Tunisian movie directed by Mohamed Zran is part of the official competition of The Middle East International Film Festival in Abu Dhabi (UAE) which ran from October 11th to 18th of the same month, 2009.
The third Middle East International Film Festival put the media spotlight back on filmmaking in the region.
Mohamed Zran has won the Best New Middle Eastern Documentary Director ($50,000) of his film for Being Here (Zarzis), Tunisia.
The movie is also competing at Italy's Florence Film Festival, which will take place from November 1st to 7th , 2009.
In "Zarzis", Mohamed Zran shows the daily lives of the inhabitants of the city of Zarzis, a coastal town located in southeastern Tunisia.
The film which was sponsored in large part by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage Preservation is nothing but a hymn to the spirit of tolerance and fraternity prevailing in the city.
In an exclusive interview for "TUNISIAONLINENEWS" , Mohamed Zran expressed his joy to receive this award , which represents a culmination of the efforts of three and a half years of hard work in preparation, photography and installation.
The film director attempted to valorize the unexplored sides of the city, highlighting its unique charm, and aesthetics which have resisted the effects of globalization and modern communication devices.
Concerning the film, Mohamed Zran said that Zarzis will be screened as of February 2010 in Tunisians cinemas.
