Gambia: Sanchaba LBS Respond to President Jammeh's Tree Planting Initiative

The call by the Gambia leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh for schools to plant trees, has indeed gained momentum, as a number of schools continue to respond positively to the call.

One school that has massively responded to this call is Sanchaba Sulay Jobe Lower Basic School, which recently organized a tree planting exercise within their school premises at Sanchaba. The school, which is known for its green and clean environment, has planted over 100 trees in the school compound, accomplished by the teachers, students and parents.

In an interview with the Daily Observer, Alhaji Alieu Omar Faal, school based monitor of the school, who deputized for the headmistress, Isatou Joof-Gagigo, expressed optimism to winning President Jammeh's initiative, adding that the exercise was specifically for the grade one pupils, whose parents support the idea of tree planting.

He added that some parents do go to the school during weekends to water their children's plants in the morning and evening time. Faal then revealed the methods and procedures taken in planting the seedlings. Commenting on the significance of planting trees, Faal reiterated the fact that trees are very important for survival, that we breathe in carbon dioxide and the plants give out oxygen which supports life.

He also commended President Jammeh for introducing such a brilliant initiative, noting that it will give the up coming generation a lot of opportunities. The trees which are in different varieties include mango, pear, orange and guava.

"The planting of more trees will make the environment look green, beautiful, colourful and attractive and at the end of the day, the children would enjoy the fruits," he concluded.
