Tanzanian employers will today receive and debate the findings of a study on local labour productivity and competitiveness at a meeting in Dar es Salaam.
To be officiated by the minister for Labour, Employment and Youth Development, Prof Juma Kapuya, the Association of Tanzania Employers annual general meeting will also discuss the role of social partners in creating employment during the current financial crisis.
The 23rd AGM will bring together employers and representatives from the government and the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
The meeting comes at a time of uncertainty in the job market, not only in Tanzania but globally, due to the effects of the global financial and economic crisis.
But global crisis aside, Tanzania is in a job crisis of its own characterised by the devastating HIV/Aids pandemic and low competitiveness and productivity, experts say.
Tanzania has an economically active population of about 21 million, according to figures from the National Bureau of Statistics. Out of these, 15.6 million are employed, about 2.4 million are underemployed, while the rest are unemployed.
Out of the employed population, about 13.8 million, or 82 per cent, are in the agricultural, forestry and fishing sectors; 1.2 million people are in trade, 1.2 million are in self employment, 245, 449 are in manufacturing, while the rest are in the mining and quarry, construction, finance, transport and communications, electricity and gas sectors.
