Harare — African writers of children's literature are being invited to submit short stories for this year's edition of the Baobab Prize.
The competition is in two categories -- the first one targets children in the 8-11 years range while the second is for the 12-15 years age group. Entries should be previously unpublished.
This year the competition carries US$ 1 000 for the best story in each category and $800 to the most promising young writer, who should be 18 years or below.
Shortlisted entries will be considered for possible publishing in the competition that is open to African citizens of all ages.
The deadline for submission is April 15 2010.
"The mission of the Baobab Prize is to identify the literary giants of the next generation and produce classic stories that will be appreciated for years to come.
"This year we want to challenge African writers to unleash their imagination. Tell us a story we've never heard before. A winning story this year will be a story that stands out," said Senegalese Rama Shagaya, who co-founded the awards in 2008.
