Thirteen officials of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) are to hold a three-day "practical interaction" with their U.S. counterparts on customs operations in the U.S.
A statement by the NCS said the officers had just completed a week-long intensive training at the University of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.
The statement said the team would be received at the John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York by an Assistant Director of Operations, Mr. John Miraldona and other U.S. Customs officials.
"The team is expected to be briefed on passenger operations and other areas of interest, in addition to being conducted round the airport's arrival and departure operations," it said. The customs team would also move to the New York City Port on Tuesday on a similar visit.
According to the statement, they are expected to be conducted round the cargo operations and Import Specialist branches at the port. The Nigerian customs officials would also be taken round the cargo examination points.
According to the statement, both Nigerian and U.S. customs officials will also discuss issues of mutual interest.
Meanwhile, Prof. Kevin Kernf, Director of Programmes, University of Pittsburgh, has lauded the Nigerian officers for their outstanding performance and commitment during the training.
Kernf spoke at a dinner which the University organised to honour the visiting officers who were presented with certificates of participation after the training.
Their training covered leadership, accountability, ethics and good corporate governance.
"These officers are highly dedicated, since none missed any of the lectures, despite the harsh weather, characterised by heavy rain and snow falls and these did not deter them from being punctual," he said.
The Nigerian team leader, Mr. Salihu Argungu thanked the university for giving the NCS the privilege to train some of its personnel at the institution.
He pledged that they would put their knowledge to good use on their return to Nigeria.
Among senior officers who participated in the programme were Comptrollers: Usman Bello, Kano/Jigawa Command; Gabriel Aliu, Seme Border; Ibrahim Abdulrasheed, Onne Port; and Dan Ugo, Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja.
