They defeated Heritage of Congo by 34 to 27 in the second encounter yesterday.
TKC got up to a good start at the African handball clubs championship currently taking place at the Yaounde sports complex. The TKC girls walloped Heritage from Congo in the second encounter played yesterday. Both seemed to be of equal strength at the beginning of the match but TKC soon took the upper in the game and led to the final whistle, carrying the day by 34-27. By so doing, TKC has set the pace for the other Cameroonian clubs involved in the competition including MINUH, FAP and Sahel of Douala.
In the opening encounter, Kabuscorp of Angola defeated Soa of Cote d'Ivoire 24-16. Minuh of Yaounde also took on Munisport of Congo in the third encounter of the day but by press time the results were not yet available. However, Cameroonian clubs stand a great chance of winning the final trophies in both the men and female categories given that three of the four representatives in the competition are already used to the tournament and have always featured among the best three. MINUH, FAP and TKC are regular participants in the tournament, having mounted the highest point of the rostrum at least once. The only new kid on the block is Sahel of Douala who are experiencing the competition for the first time.
More so, according to the president of the Cameroon Handball federation, Jules Moudime Njalla, the Cameroonian clubs involved in the tournament having been training since a month and a half and galvanised by the home crowd, the clubs can do wonders.
The competition was opened yesterday by the Minster of Sports and Physical education, Michel Zoah, in the company of Cameroon's Roving ambassador, Roger Milla, the Minister of Youth Affairs Adoum Garoua and the president of the confederation of African handball. The brief opening ceremony was marked by a welcome speech from the President of the Confederation of African Handball, choreographic display of some traditional dances and the declaration of the Minster of Sports and Physical Education opening the games.
It is worthy to note that the competition which is in its 31st edition, was initially scheduled to take place in Niamey, Niger but was finally relocated to Cameroon after Niger desisted. The facilities offered by the Yaounde Sports complex weighed much in the decision to take the event to Yaounde given that the first vice president of the African Handball Confederation, Dr Lanre Glover, visited Cameroon from 19 to 22 August, 2009, to inspect the structure and the engagement of the Cameroonian authorities The indoor hall has a capacity of 5 000 places and 2 modern electronic chronometers, 4 change rooms for teams, 2 change rooms for referees, one presse room and one VIP lodge.
