Africa: Wade Decries Religious Divisions in Africa

Kampala — SENEGALESE President Abdoulaye Wade has asked leaders in Africa to desist from religious divisions for a better future. Wade said religion had divided people, thus hindering development.

"Many parts of Africa have lagged behind because of religious differences. African countries spend more time in wars than planning for their people," he said.

He made the remarks in a speech delivered by Senegal's minister of local government and decentralisation Dr. Sow Aliou, while opening the 3rd World Scouts Inter-religious Symposiums at Hotel Africana in Kampala on Wednesday.

The symposium, held under the theme "Solidarity, Reflection and Celebration for Peace," is organised by the international union of Muslims.

Wade, who is also the chairman of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, said the scouts fraternity is focused on promoting unity and good behaviour among the community.

He commended President Yoweri Museveni for putting the youth at the forefront of development programmes.

The Chief Scout of Uganda, Dr. Maggie Kigozi, initiated Aliou into the scout association at the occasion.

Kigozi said scouting should be re-introduced in all schools as part of the curriculum to groom the young ones.

In her presentation, the state minister for youth and children affairs, Jessica Alupo, said this was an opportunity to showcase Uganda's tourism and investment potential.

"Over 250 delegates from over 50 countries are expected to take part. Dialogue is the only way to solve any issue," Alupo said.

She said the symposium would be closed by President Yoweri Museveni on October 24 at the Uganda National Scout Campsite at Kaazi.
