Uganda: Malinga Banks On Experience for Marathon

For Alex Malinga, Nairobi is like home. The national record holder (2:12:12) is one of three Ugandans competing in today's Standard Chartered Bank Nairobi marathon.

His past exploits in the Kenyan capital have raised his confidence and optimism. "It's pretty cold at the moment but I have also been training under similar conditions in Bukwo. I think the weather won't affect me in any way," Malinga said.

He was sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank to compete in the marathon alongside David Kiteria and Irene Chemusto. Malinga recorded the best performance by a Ugandan in the Nairobi marathon when he finished third two years ago.

Having failed to qualify for the World Athletics Championship held in Berlin two months ago, Malinga is well rested and determined TO earn his ticket to next year's Commonwealth Games. Ugandan athletes will however get stiff competition from the Kenyan runners.
