Katsina — A new department of water and sanitation is to be created in all the thirty four local government areas of Katsina state to coordinate and prevent the spread of all environmentally related diseases in the rural areas.

Governor Ibrahim Shema, who approved the establishment of the departments in response to a legislation passed by the state's House of Assembly to that effect, direct THElocal government service commission to appoint relevant environmental health officers to man the departments.

The departments will henceforth coordinate environmental sanitation, diseases control, water supply, immunization and health education activities in all the rural communities within the thirty four local government areas of the state.

The President of the Environmental Health Workers Association, Sanitarian Sani Sama'ila, who spoke to newsmen in Katsina, said the new departments will curb the spread of environmentally related diseases particularly in the rural areas and check the menace posed by preventable diseases in the state.

The President who praised the government for the initiative said the establishment should not be seen as meaning to undermine the primary health care services but rather speed up the health care delivery and a separation of curative and preventable functions in health delivery.

He assured government of their resolve to work in the interest of the rural communities and seek the cooperation of other stakeholders.
