Nigeria: FCTA, Cuba Partner On Agriculture, Health

The FCTA administration will be collaborating with the Cuban government to improve the fortunes of health and agricultural sectors in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The FCT Minister, Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero gave this assurance Tuesday while receiving the Cuban Ambassador, Elia Savon that paid him a courtesy call in his office, Garki I District, Abuja.

The Minister acknowledged the giant strides of the Cuban government in the sphere of health and agriculture sub-sectors and expressed the willingness of his administration to exploit this romance to the full advantage of the residents of the Federal Capital Territory.

Senator Aliero lamented that malaria and blindness are poising serious challenges that the state governments, Federal Capital Territory and the Federal Government are grappling with.

The Minister revealed that the FCT Secretary of Health and Human Services will soon lead a delegation of FCT Administration officials to Cuba in order to explore concrete means of collaborating with Cuba government for the benefit of the FCT residents. Speaking earlier, the Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Elia Savon disclosed that Cuba is strong in Pharmaceutical and Vaccine production and is ready to impact such on Nigeria.

Mr. Savon said Cuba has developed a technology referred to as "miracle operation" which was used to restore the sights of 3.5 million blind persons in four years in their country.

According to him, Cuba has also developed a biological means of eradicating mosquitoes by killing or rendering them inactive and therefore recommended that the FCT Minister import that technology to tackle the perennial problems of mosquitoes with its attendant health effects on the lives of the residents of Abuja.

The Ambassador who made case for a stronger South-South Cooperation further revealed that the Cuban government will soon open a cultural centre in Abuja.
