Nigeria: Govt Gives Contractors Marching Orders

Bauchi — The contractors handling the construction of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) projects in Bauchi have been advised to work strictly within the guidelines and contracts' term provided in the specification of bill of quantity of the project to avoid double job as all sub standard jobs would be rejected.

Senior Special Assistant to Governor Isa Yuguda, on MDGs, Hajiya Hajara Yabubu Wanka, gave the advice while on inspection tour of project sites at Wuntin Dada, Bada koshi, Birshin Fualani, solar powered boreholes projects and maternities in Bayara, Yuguda Village and Federal Low-cost housing estate of Bauchi Local Area of the state, saying that "using poor materials for the construction of our projects is against the contract terms and it would be rejected".

Other maternities and solar powered projects inspected are Fanti Maternity, in Alkaleri Local Government Area, Garin Saleh Mamaciji, Wanka, in Kirfi LGA, Bununu, Gidgid Hamma in Tafawa Balewa LGA, Unguwan Rimi, Boi in Bogoro LGA and Wandi and Pege Doka in Dass across the state

Wanka explained that, "monitoring of project sites does not mean that we are witch hunting you or to fault your jobs, but all we are doing is to make corrections base on the project specification and to ensure that everything is being done in conformity with our agreement terms and bill of quantity."

She said, all the benefited communities have been mobilised to monitor project sites because the projects are directly belonging to them, she challenge communities to report directly to her office in case the notice contractors are using sub- standard materials and poor cementing for the buildings.

She also emphasised the need for sign posts in all the locations of the projects with full address of contractors, location, consultant and specification for easy identification of owner's project. The wards' head in their separate remarks, expressed their satisfaction with the level of work going on at the project, also commended MDGS for its developmental projects that have direct bearing to the common man on the streets.
