Uganda: Education Boss Bans School Trips

The Jinja Municipal principle education officer has announced a ban on tours by schools in the municipality.

Mr Jonathan Kamwana said school heads waste a lot of money organising outings for pupils without any positive academic results.

"Head teachers present huge budgets for tours but at the end of the year none of them produce a first grade. I have stopped signing any letter authorising schools to take out pupils," he said.

He was last Wednesday addressing head teachers and parents in Jinja Central Division who were brainstorming on the causes of declining performance in schools in the municipality.

Mr Kamwana said head teachers have a tendency of concentrating on pupils' tours in third term instead of making final touches in preparation for the Uganda National Examination Board examinations.

"You are crying over the lack of money to print tests for primary seven pupils but when it comes to taking these candidates for tours, you don't spend less than Shs2 million. Is that being serious on your side?" he asked.

He said whoever fails to listen to his order will be dealt with accordingly.
