Uganda: Post Bank Goes to Kamwenge

Hope Mafaranga

25 October 2009

Kampala — Postbank has offered the first banking services to Kamwenge district, amidst challenges of remoteness.

Opening the branch last week, Edward Musingye, the LC5 chairman, said Postbank's arrival was timely.

"People have been traveling distances in search of banking services. The coming of Postbank will save time and money," Musingye said.

Because of the poor road network in the district, banks concentrated in the nearby districts of Kabarole and Ibanda, which have better roads, he added.

Stephen Mukweli, the managing director of Postbank, said the bank aims to work closely with SACCOs in rural areas to enable people access funds, which will facilitate the creation of their own businesses and help them in fighting poverty.

Kamwenge is surrounded by waterbodies and forests that had hindered operations of banking institutions in a population of 368,164.
