Africa: Artists Meet to Explore Continent's Potential

Nairobi — News of a brave new venture: Artists and administrators from 11 African countries are meeting this weekend at the Kuona Trust in Nairobi to discover what opportunities the continent offers.

Explained Kuona director Danda Jaroljmek: "For too long African artists have looked to Europe and America. This network of 11 African countries has connected artists, enabling them to take part in residencies, workshops, open days and exhibitions as part of the Triangle African Artists Network."

Representatives from South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Mauritius, Zambia, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Kenya are joining colleagues from the Gasworks Gallery and Triangle Arts Trust in London to share their ideas and activities and to generate more pan-African cultural connections.

The event culminates in an exhibition showing works from 10 countries.

Kenyan artists taking part include Maggie Otieno, Beatrice Wanjiku, Allan Githuka, John Kamicha, Anthony Okello, Sane Wadu, Eunice Wadu, Richard Kimathi, Maryanne Muthoni, Michael Soi , Peterson Kamwathi, Ato Malinda, Mary Ogembo, Sam Hopkins and Ogonga Thom.

Those from other African countries include: Krishna Luchooman (Mauritius), Sultana Haukim (Mauritius), Sam Nlengethwa (South Africa), Nadine Hutton (South Africa), Evarist Chikawe (Tanzania), Mathew Mudenda (Zambia), Wilson Ngoni (Botswana), Monica Mosarwa (Botswana), Maria Caley (Namibia), Gretta Nashongo, (Namibia), Atta Kwami (Ghana) and Jacob Jari (Nigeria).

The Ford Foundation is supporting the venture.
