Nigeria:Cities Alliance Approves Nigerian Report

Abuja — Minister of State Works, Housing and Urban Development Mrs. Grace Ekpwhire has announced that the Cities Alliance has approved the long awaited "The State of Nigerian Cities Report," with the purpose of gathering necessary information on Nigerian Urban Centres with a view to address the challenges in the city centres for sustainable development.

Mrs. Ekpwhire was speaking at the national stakeholders sensitization workshop organised in collaboration with ALCON, UN- Habitat, Cities Alliances' and other international organisations held yesterday in Abuja.

She explained that in addition to the sustainabity of city centres development, the approval will enhance the capacity of the Ministry to coordinate a nationwide project to document the contribution of cities to the economic growth of the country, adding that the initiative is coming at a time when the nation is prosecuting the goal of making Nigeria to be among the twenty largest economies of the world by 2020.

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Fashola represented by the Commissioner of Physical Planning Mrs. Bolaji Abosede said Lagos, with a population of about 20.15 million people has continue to serve as a home for all.

She said that the State Government has minimised the rate of collapsed buildings with the use of better infrastructure and commended the efforts of Cities Alliances as a laudable project.
