Nigeria: Tension As Police Bring Murder Suspect to Secretariat

Abuja — The atmosphere at Kwali Area Council's secretariat was tense on Friday when the police brought in a murder suspect to confront some staff of the place.

The man, Mr. Fugoti Adeh, a Jukun from Taraba State, was one of those suspected to have had a hand in the murder of the council' s boss, Samuel Gwamna.

The suspect, who was once a member of the council's vigilante group, got to the secretariat at 11 a.m. in company of three plain-clothes police detectives and was led straight to the council's conference hall.

When the news of his arrival spread to offices in the secretariat, a crowd formed in the place as people wanted to see him but were prevented by security posted to man the entrance to the hall.

In the hall, our reporter observed the presence of the acting Chairman of the council, Mr. Danlami Saleh Yebu, council's Secretary, Suleiman Gwatana, council's head of administration, supervisory councilor for special duties and members of the vigilante group of the council.

One of those present in the hall said the policemen asked the suspect to say all he knows about the murder of Samuel Gwamna.

"The suspect denied having a hand in the death of the council boss and told his interrogators that he left the council and went back to his state, after he retired from the vigilante service four months before Samuel Gwamna was murdered," the witness said.

He said the ex-vigilante member further stated that since he left the council, he has not returned to the FCT until when the police came to Taraba and arrested him recently.

"Acting Chairman of the council, Mr. Danlami Saleh Yebu, during the interrogation of the suspect asked whether the suspect knows him, and he said no," the witness added.

After the two hours interrogation session was over, the detectives, along with the suspect and council officials proceeded to the council boss office for a closed door meeting that lasted for 30 minutes before the suspect was taken out of the premises.

Our reporter gathered that the suspect was a vigilante during the administration of Alhaji Mohammed Gimba as council boss.

At that time armed robbers were terrorizing motorists along Kwali-Lokoja road.
