The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has given approval for Nigerians hosting of the regional workshop on the review of the implementation of special measures to enhance maritime security (ISPS Code) in West and Central Africa sub region.
In a statement by the image maker of NIMASA, Ego Nwokocha, the workshop will hold in Lagos on this month.
She quoted the Honorable Minister of Transportation, Alhaji Ibrahim Isa Bio as disclosing that the main objective of the regional workshop is to access the status of implementation, the level of compliance and the degree of enforcement of the provisions of the chapter x1-2 of safety of life at sea (SOLAS) Convention. She noted the essence is to ascertain future efforts towards improving maritime security in the West and Central African region
The workshop will not only afford member countries the opportunity to review their respective level of effort in terms of improved maritime and port security but will as well enables the sub region share enriched experiences acknowledge good practices, and identify areas that will require further technical assistance from Imo.
The world maritime body, the minister revealed close Nigeria to host the workshop considering the geographical location of Nigeria among the west and central Africa region adding that it is also an attestation of the successes of previous regional workshops of Imo organization in Nigeria.
Recall that in February 2007, Imo organization a regional workshop on the subject for the countries workshop on the subject for the countries in eastern and southern Africa [ESA] in Maputo. The workshop enables participating states in that region to share experiences on their various level of implementation and identified areas of further assistance from Imo.
Over 40 international delegates are expected to attend the workshop.
