Kenya: Balala Supporters Hit Out at Mayor

Nairobi — Political war between cabinet minister Najib Balala and Mombasa Mayor Ahmed Modhar was on Sunday rekindled when supporters of the minister claimed that the mayor was hindering constituency development fund (CDF) projects in Mvita constituency.

The minister's supporters under the auspices of ODM committee in Mvita constituency said the mayor had become a stumbling block in the implementation of CDF projects.

The committee chairman Mr Abdulhamid Abdulrahman, said the mayor should not use politics and hearsay to tarnish Mr Balala's name.

He claimed that the mayor was being used by tycoons to cause political problems in Mvita.

"If Modhar has plans to contest the Mvita parliamentary seat he should do so. He should not use his position to undermine Mvita politics," said Mr Abdulrahman.

He noted that plans had been put in place to make Mvita clinic operational for 24 hours but said the mayor blocked its development.

Secretary of the committee Mr Saad Faraj said they will not be threatened by people whom he termed as "tenants" of the party.

He said politics of undermining other people were long gone noting that everybody has a right to declare their intention to vie for political seats.

Mr Modhar dismissed allegations by the committee members saying that there was no way he can undermine the development of Mvita.

"Those claims are baseless, they have been sent by their boss and my level is more than that of their boss. To answer them is a waste of time," said Mr Modhar.

He said there are procedures to be followed in setting up of projects and that the council has spent Sh4 million on rehabilitation of the Mvita clinic roof.

The mayor who denied claims that he was being used by tycoons said other members of parliament from Mombasa have gone to the council and informed him on their plans in setting up developments projects in their respective constituencies.
