Dar Es Salaam — Smallholder tea growers have a smile in theirs faces following an injection of Tsh10 billion (US$9 million) into the tea sector.
The support from two British organizations Wood Family Trust Africa (WFT Africa) and Gatsby Foundation is aimed at doubling tea production in the next six years.
The support was announced recently during the project launch at the Southern Sun Hotel in Dar es Salaam by the minister of Agriculture, Food & Cooperatives, Mr. Steven Wassira.
The Director General for Tanzania Smallholders Tea Development Agency Mr. Hamis Umande said the support shows that the tea sector in the country has potential and is growing. He appealed to other organizations both foreign and local to support the improvement of tea industry even for old tea growers.
Tanzania has prepared a national tea development plan for 2008-2013 aimed at boosting tea production by raising and trans-planting tea seedling in the country.
A five year programme targets tea production to increase by about one-third from 32,000 tons this year to 42,500 tons in six years.
