In a relationship, one of the ways to show your partner he/she is special is by showering the person with gifts. And so, it's no news when we hear of a person buying gifts for his or her lover.
What is news however is when the courts and police are called in to retrieve these gifts from the receiver following the collapse of the relationship like the biblical walls of Jericho.
Unfortunately, this has become the norm in celebrity relationships. It is common thing now for one-time lovers, and even couples to request that gifts bought for each other while the going was good be returned, otherwise, heaven would be let loose.
For instance, the Eberipapa 1 of Bayelsa, Timaya, has been so much in the news after he went an Alakija, Lagos-based church, Praise Resurrection Ministries aka Jehovah Sharp Sharp Church and disrupted the service, thus leaving several members of the house of God bruised.
In what an eye witness described as a reflection of the lyrics of one of his hit songs, Timaya, in company of some of his goons, arrived the Church without notice and sauntered into the thanksgiving service being held in honour of a newly wedded couple, Bridget and Nerho.
On arrival, he was allegedly given a seat by one of the church ushers, but insisted he wanted a place in the front row, where, according to our source, he would be positioned to listen to the pastor and his sermon.
But when the usher stood his ground, he calmly sat without betraying any emotion on what he planned to do.
Meanwhile, his ex-lover, Empress Njamah, who was said to have been alarmed by his presence in the church, quickly stood up from where she sat and made her way to the front row, where some elders of the Church sat.
According to our source, she had expressed fear to one of the ushers about the danger of Timaya coming to Church, saying she was certain he was there to make trouble.
And true to her prediction, Timaya, who had seen her move, decided it was time to make his own move. It was at that point that he drew the attention of one of the ushers, insisting he also wanted a place at the front row. His move, however, was thwarted by the usher, who, at this point, suspected something was wrong.
As the usher stood his ground, Timaya lost control and began to scream to the chagrin of the worshippers that, "I want to retrieve the key of my car, which Empress took away from my house."
But his manager, Daniel Lloyds, who later spoke about the issue, said "It was just a misunderstanding, adding "Timaya and Empress have been having issues, and he asked her to return his car keys. She refused and told him to do his worst. That's why he went to the church."
Timaya's decision however, was his undoing because immediately he started asking for his car keys in a loud voice, naval officers from the nearby barrack were called in and they handcuffed and handed him over to men of the Festac Police formation, according to our source.
Timaya says the actress squandered money he left in trust with her and also took the car from his house.
And while we were still waking up from that story, another filtered in that Glo ambassador, Monalisa Chinda, who is asking hubby, Segun Dejo-Richards, for divorce, is also asking that he return her car with immediate effect.
Monalisa had dragged her former heart throb to the Anthony Police Station, Lagos, where she made formal report that she wanted to get her Nissan 2008 car from the house they both lived in as husband and wife.
According to her, she bought the car shortly after she was paid some money by Globacom, a leading telecom company in Nigeria as one of its ambassadors. She was accompanied to the station by some family members, Weekend Circuit gathered.
Dejo has however returned her car in a bid to see if he can still make peace with his estranged wife but that seems far from becoming a reality.
Now, Stephanie Okereke had, while asking for divorce from her ex-husband, Chikelue Iloanusi, demanded that he moves out of the house they shared as husband and wife in Victoria Garden City, saying she was the one that bought the house. But then, Chikelue we learnt had documents that proved her wrong.
These are just a few of the ugly stories that trail the many relationship break ups in the entertainment industry. Everywhere, it's the story of 'return my car', 'return my house' or one thing or the other, which goes to show that these people loved with condition because a gift, even when the going gets tough, should not go by another name.
We hope others thinking of breaking up or even tying the knot will spare us such 'tragicomedy', by taking time to thoroughly agree on what to give and what not to give.

With this new trend of scorned lovers retrieving their gifts, isn't it now time to consider only sending or receiving gifts that cannot be retrieved? How about sending your loved one A DSL EXPERIENCE... jet skiing, karting, bowling, paintballing. The only way to retrieve that....... would be from their memory..ha! dsl-gifts.com
