Abuja — Abuja, the nation's capital is home to about 2,000 commercial sex workers, apart from those engaged in it on part time basis, says the Daughters Of Abraham Foundation (DOAF).

DOAF ,says the situation can be attributed to the present economic condition in the country.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja at the weekend to announce the 15th anniversary of the foundation, Director of DOAF, Evangelist Margaret Bargo said most girls were either lured into prostitution due to hardship or instability in their families, or were forced into it by criminals looking for ways to exploit them.

Speaking on the foundation established by Late Mrs. Julie Useni, Bargo explained that their mission was to "restore the dignity of womanhood by leading sex workers to Christ and empowering the girl child to arise and occupy her rightful position in the Church, society and the nation at large".

This she said can be achieved through regeneration, restoration, recreation and rehabilitation, counseling, vocational and educational training to turn them into responsible members of the society.

The foundation called for a legislation to help reduce and totally eradicate the patronage of prostitutes and stop the profession.

Achieving this mission Evangelist Bargo pointed out, has a herculean task but added that not less than 5,000 lives have been touched, while 223 girls and women have been successfully trained and rehabilitated thereby "contributing quota part to nation building".

The 15th anniversary and graduation of the Daughters will be held on 28th and 29th October.
