Nigeria:Onovo Deploys 250 Policemen to Railway

27 October 2009

INSPECTOR-GENERAL of Police, Mr. Ogbonna Onovo, has approved the posting of additional 250 policemen to the Railway Police Command.

Mr. Patrick Egbuniwe, Commissioner of Police in the Railway Command, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) weekend in Lagos that the redeployment was to tackle security challenges following the re-organisation of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).

"The Federal Government is taking serious interest in bringing back the rail transportation system, a lot of money has been spent on buying coaches and track facilities. "In the next three months when the locomotives arrive, there is every assurance that the railway will move to a new level. "When there is prosperity in railway, the next thing that can follow is crime," he said.

Egbuniwe gave an assurance that the development would enhance safety of lives and property in the command.

He listed inadequate accommodation and lack of patrol vehicles as challenges facing the command, saying none of the divisional police stations under the command had a patrol van.

Egwuniwe observed that the staff quarters in the command had been taken over by policemen from other commands.

He appealed to the corporation and other organisations to assist the command in purchasing patrol vehicles.

"The absence of patrol vans in our division is making our job difficult. As at now, we are not experiencing violent crimes, but we are moving toward that time," he said.
