Windhoek — The Namibia Chess Federation (NCF) is 550 chess sets richer after Bank Windhoek this week handed over the sets to be distributed to schools in the south.
"Chess has proven to improve the cognitive skills of children. Therefore, Bank Windhoek is proud to support this undertaking, as the 550 chess sets given to the NCF today will facilitate improvements in the memory, concentration and time management skills of over 1000 children in many schools in the south", said Riaan van Rooyen, Head: Corporate Communication and Social Investment at Bank Windhoek.
"Chess for Namibia means a smarter Namibian nation", said Max Nitzborn, President of the Namibia Chess Federation.
Nitzborn further added that the NCF is trying to get chess as a subject into schools, as it has been proven that playing chess enhances the academic performance of children.
According to Nitzborn, the NFC aims to develop children's skills in chess by sending grand masters to travel around the country teaching and identifying talented children. The scouted talent will then be trained and mentored into grand masters, who will represent Namibia on an international level.
This week's donation is a continuation from last year when Bank Windhoek gave the NCF 1000 sets which it distributed to schools in the northern regions.
