Nairobi — True to the forecast by the Kenya Meteorology department on extraordinary rainfalls, the coast region has for the last two days experienced heavy rains that have disrupted some activities in many parts.
Director of Kenya Meteorology services Dr Joseph Mukabana said their forecast had showed heavy rains will start from yesterday in the coast. The situation, he said, was expected to continue for at least one week.
"People at the coast should brace themselves for increased rains in the next few days to come," he said in a telephone interview.
In Likoni, Kilindini district in Mombasa Muslim faithful at Masjid Azhar missed their evening and morning prayers as the mosque was flooded forcing them to spend a lot of time and effort scooping water from the flooded mosque while school going children were forced to wade through flooded streets.
In Kiwerera, in Likoni, about 25 houses have been submerged and residents are already expressing fears of an outbreak of water borne diseases if the drainage system is not cleared in time.
A resident Abdilahi Salim said the rains and flooding have opened sewers with raw sewage mixing with the flooded surface runoffs.
"The situation is made worse by lack of a drainage system in the area leading to water flowing and filling up any available space. We are calling on the Mombasa Municipal council to look into this issue because our lives, particularly those of young children, are in danger," he said.
They blamed a contractor who undertook to rehabilitate the Likoni-Ukunda road for failing to put proper drainage which has led to flooding in the area.
