A ranking Member of the Liberian House of Representative, Hon. Dusty Wolokolie was yesterday elected as Vice Chairman of the Permanent Committee on Cooperation, International Relations and Conflict Resolutions of the Pan African Parliament (PAP) in keeping with Rule 22 (6) of the Parliament's Rules of Procedures.
In the hotly contested poll between Hon. Wolokolie, the candidate of the West African Region and Hon. Nkodo Dang Roger of Cameroun as candidate of the Central African Region, voting was conducted in two rounds with a tie between the two candidates each time, and with the third round seeing the Liberian legislator emerging as the winner.
Earlier the members of the Committee elected Hon. Abduselam Ahmed Hassan of Ethiopia and a candidate of the Eastern Region as Chairman of the Committee and Hon. Gonda Jean-Benoit of the Central African Republic and a candidate of the Central Region as Rapporteur. As provided for in Rule 26 (4) of the PAP Rules of Procedures, the Committee on Cooperation, International Relations & Conflict Resolutions amongst other matters:
Consider issues relating to the development of an efficient policy in matters of cooperation and international relations of the Parliament and the Union;
Consider the conventions and protocols linking the Parliament with regional and international institutions and report to the Parliament;
Carry out examinations on the revision of Protocols and Treaties of the Union;
Assist the Parliament in its efforts of conflict prevention and resolution.
Yesterday marked the formal opening of the First Session of the Second Parliament of the Pan African Parliament at the Headquarters of PAP in Johannesburg, South Africa. The occasion was addressed by the President of the host nation, South Africa, His Excellency President Jacob Zuma.
