Kampala — ORGANISERS of the MTN Kampala International marathon will have to deal with an extra 4,000 runners for the November 22 event.
A target of 15,000 runners had been set for Kampala's biggest sporting social event, but the organisers were overwhelmed when the numbers shot up by 4,058. Last year's event attracted 11,000.
"We will not lock out anyone who has registered. One thing I can assure you is that everyone will run. The situation is under control," said Sheila Kangwagye (top), the MTN public relations officer after the two-week registration period.
About 6,000 runners registered on deadline day.
"It shows how big the marathon has grown. We are still looking at the individuals who have registered, but we can say that we have 204 corporate teams," Kangwagye added.
The New Vision has entered a full corporate team and over 150 individual runners led by CEO Robert Kabushenga. DFCU (16), Umeme (10), Tullow Oil (6) and Stanbic Bank (5) are among the corporates that have entered more teams.
