Abakaliki — WIFE of Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs. Josephine is collaborating with the United Nations Children's Education Fund (UNICEF) to prevent maternal mortality and morbidity, particularly in the state.
Mrs. Elechi, who spoke at a dissemination and tool development workshop on "Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Law" in Abakaliki, identified ignorance, poverty, poor access to health facilities, inadequate skilled birth attendants, poor and ineffective referral system, lack of transportation as major causes of unsafe motherhood and child death.
Denouncing the high rate of maternal mortality and morbidity in Nigeria, particularly in the rural communities, the Ebonyi first lady said her state government through health polices has been taking practical steps to make motherhood safer, especially in the rural areas.
She noted that the emergence of Mother and Child Care Initiative and Related Matter Law 2008 in the state, was meant to address directly and indirectly, the factors underlying maternal death.
"I am convinced that the effective implementation of the law combined with other initiatives of government, like the state free obstetric care service would ultimately facilitate the reduction of maternal mortality and morbidity," said Mrs. Elechi.
