Malawi Lost 2 -0 to the United Arab Emirates in a Under-17 World Cup Group E match played at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on Monday, continuing Africa's poor run in the competition.
Skipper Marwan Alsafar put UAE ahead with a superb free kick goal on 63 minutes before Mohammed Sebil scored an audacious goal in the 81st minute, shooting home from close to the centre circle. Skipper and goalkeeper Cuthbert Seengwa pulled off several saves, which the healthy crowd appreciated.
Malawi had two players sent off. Kondwani Lufeyo saw red after a second booking, while Gasten Simkonda got a straight red in stoppage time for a professional foul.
Besides the 3-3 draw achieved by hosts Nigeria against Germany at the weekend, all the African teams in action thus far have ended up on the losing side.
Iran defeated Gambia 2-0 in Calabar, Turkey defeated Burkina Faso by a lone goal in Enugu, before Malawi lost out to UAE.
The fifth African representatives, Algeria, face a daunting task against Italy on Tuesday at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna.
In the opening game in Group F in Kaduna, South Korea stopped Uruguay 3-1.
Seung Woo, Heung Min and Jon Ho scored for the Koreans, while Sebastian Gallegos netted Uruguay's consolation goal from the penalty spot on the hour.
