Nigeria: Swiss Shower Praise On Lagosians

Lagos — Switzerland coach Danny Ryser last night appreciated the incredible support given to the team by Lagos fans admitting they have been made to feel at home in Nigeria at the ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup by the passionate local fans.

The young Swiss side celebrated their 4-3 victory over Japan at the Teslim Balogun Stadium and by extension, their progress to the second round of the tournament with a lap of honour in wet conditions.

In addition, they underlined their happiness by throwing their jerseys at the spectators occupying the eastern stand of the stadium.

Traditionally, Lagos fans are known for their non-partisanship and tendency to stay on the side of the team that play entertaining and positive football.

They shifted their support to the Swiss who shaded the game in the second half despite a laid back and a difficult first half display.

"It was a fantastic and beautiful experience. My players really enjoyed the atmosphere. The fans were just wonderful and this is a moment which you will want to savour in your life," Ryser said at a post match media conference.

His view was echoed by one of his players, Kofi Nimeley who said that Switzerland who still have to play their last match against Brazil in Abuja on Friday would aim to top Group B so that they can return and play their second round knock-out match in Lagos.

"We feel at home in Lagos because the fans seem to have adopted us as their home team. We love it here and will definitely want to play our knock out game here" said Nimeley whose parents are from Ghana.

The holding midfielder who was substituted in 43 minutes for Roman Buess equally expressed his happiness to be a part of Nigeria 2009 as the tournament is taking place in Africa.
