Singida — Work on a major water project to cost $12.43 million (about Sh16 billion) is expected to kick off next month.
The project, jointly being funded by BADEA, OPEC and the Government, would be a great relief to 81,662 residents of Singida municipality.
The acting director of the Singida Urban Water and Sewerage Authority (Suwasa), Mr Kombe Mushi, said the Government had already signed a contract with Spencon Service Ltd and Don Consult Ltd which would undertake the construction.
He said the parties have already held the first meeting and the contractors have been directed to start the work immediately.
He said some of it includes preparations for ten boreholes at Kisaki and Mwankoko areas, to be financed by the Government.
The contractors are also required to construct four water tanks which can preserve 6,000,000 litres of water. The tanks will be built alongside a chlorination system at Uwanja wa ndege and Karakana suburbs.
"It is our hope that this project will be a great relief to our people as it will improve availability of water. We expect that, if everything goes as planned, it will be completed in December 2011," he said.
Meanwhile, the acting director singled out under production as one of the challenges facing Suwasa. According to him, it produces 5,188,000 litres of water daily while the demand stands at 7,150,000 litres.
Other challenges were meager revenue collected as many customers do not pay their water bills and the revenue collected was not enough to cover costs, he said.
